Down the front is the passageway to your lungs (sometimes called the windpipe) through which you breathe. And at the very back of the throat is an opening into your nose to let the air in and out. As you swallow, this entryway closes up. At the same time, a flap of skin falls over the windpipe to prevent food from âgoing down the wrong wayâ and into your lungs.
