Now your tongue pushes the bolus around to the back of your mouth, where muscles in your throat take over. The throat is a busy place. Down the front is the passageway to your lungs (sometimes called the windpipe) through which you breathe. And at the very back of the throat is an opening into your nose to let the air in and out. As you swallow, this entryway closes up. At the same time, a flap of skin falls over the windpipe to prevent food from “going down the wrong way” and into your lungs.
